This guide on Spiritual Direction offers insights into the practice's history, models, and practical applications for clergy and laity alike.
Spiritual direction has been an essential aspect of the Christian tradition since the early days of the church. In those times, desert mothers and fathers were sought for their wisdom and guidance, providing a foundation for spiritual growth. Today, as retreats gain popularity and interest in monastic spirituality rises, spiritual direction is increasingly recognized as a vital element of Christian ministry, moving beyond its mystical associations.
This guide is designed to equip both clergy and laity who are either engaged in spiritual direction or training for it. It is divided into several parts that explore various dimensions of spiritual direction. Part One delves into the question of what spiritual direction truly is, examining biblical, historical, and contemporary models. It also addresses the qualities that make for a good spiritual director.
Subsequent sections focus on the processes of listening and responding—not only to God but also to others and ourselves. Topics include prayer, discernment, and interpreting religious experiences. The guide emphasizes recognizing the divine in everyday life, journaling, and the importance of holy leisure. Finally, it addresses how spiritual direction can be effectively integrated within the local church, making Spiritual Direction a comprehensive resource for anyone involved in this transformative practice.
'This is quite simply the book on spiritual direction we've been waiting on for years. Perhaps some of the book's freshness might lie in the author being a New Zealander. The sub-title of the book is 'A practical introduction’ and it's almost a course in itself. There are questions for reflection, a multitude of possible exercises and sometimes the reader is invited to think about a topic before reading the relevant section of the book. There are also lots of verbatim transcripts of chunks of direction sessions. While outlining the various models of spiritual direction as well as other varieties of helping relationships, Pickering details her approach which she calls 'contemplative, incarnational spiritual direction'. -- Gordon Jeff
