The book Down the Track explores the rich history and impact of Camas, an outdoor activity centre, on its community and visitors.
A celebration of Camas, the Iona Community’s outdoor activity centre located on the Isle of Mull, Down the Track highlights the centre's commitment to creativity, connection with nature, community, and outdoor spirituality. This unique place has profoundly enriched the lives of many young people and adults, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The narratives within the book reflect the transformative experiences that have taken place at Camas over the decades.
Down the Track chronicles the history of Camas from its inception in the 1940s when George MacLeod brought 'Borstal Boys' to the centre, to its modern redevelopment and current programming. The anthology captures a wide range of themes, including ecology, community, youth work, theology, history, outdoor education, and social justice, showcasing how the centre has evolved while remaining true to its core values.
This collection features inspirational poems, essays, quotes, interviews, and writings from former staff, volunteers, local residents, Iona Community members, and group leaders. Notably, the voices of young people are interwoven throughout the book, providing insight into their experiences and reflections. Rachel McCann, a former youth and social worker with over twenty years of involvement at Camas, has curated this anthology, drawing on a broad network of Camas friends to enrich the narrative and celebrate the spirit of the centre.
