The Translated Texts for Historians Colouring Book cover

The line-drawings that have adorned the covers of volumes in Liverpool University Press’s Translated Texts for Historians series since its inception have long been admired. The range of sources has varied considerably: from late-antique coins, mosaics, and sculptures to medieval manuscripts and early modern representations of late ancient subjects. They display a diverse range of subjects, including a striding lion, emperors in various guises, gathered participants at church councils, bishops in ornate robes, buildings and architectural decorations. Initially undertaken by Gail Heather and Roger Tomlin and occasionally other artists, gradually from 2005 onwards they were taken on by Mark Humphries, a late antique historian, who developed a considerable talent as an artist for producing intricate and expressive line drawings in his spare time. Assembled under one cover for the first time, and published in the 40th anniversary year of Translated Texts for Historians, this colouring book contains a selection of Mark Humphries’s drawings for readers to enjoy colouring in, or simply admire.
