In The Empusium, the latest work from the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, readers are transported to a sanatorium on the brink of World War I. Set in September 1913, a young Pole suffering from tuberculosis arrives at Wilhelm Opitz’s Guesthouse for Gentlemen, a health resort nestled in the Silesian mountains. The atmosphere is thick with the weight of impending conflict, and each evening, the residents gather to indulge in the hallucinogenic local liqueur, engaging in heated debates about the pressing issues of their time: monarchy versus democracy, the existence of devils, the perceived inferiority of women, and the looming question of war or peace. Amidst these discussions, a sense of foreboding permeates the guesthouse and its surroundings.

As the newcomer grapples with his own inner turmoil and the mysterious occurrences around him, he begins to sense that something sinister is at play. Unbeknownst to him, dark forces are already at work, observing and preparing to make their move. The narrative unfolds with a blend of horror, comedy, folklore, and feminist themes, showcasing Olga Tokarczuk's masterful storytelling as she revisits the territory explored by Thomas Mann in The Magic Mountain. This novel intricately weaves together personal and collective dilemmas, challenging the characters to confront the truths that lie within and beyond.
