In a war-torn Baghdad, a scavenger's creation leads to chaos and horror. Frankenstein in Baghdad explores the absurdities of life amidst conflict.
Set against the backdrop of a war-torn Baghdad, Frankenstein in Baghdad is a satirical reimagining of Mary Shelley's classic tale. The novel follows Hadi, a scavenger in the rubble-strewn streets of US-occupied Iraq, who collects body parts from the deceased. His unsettling mission is driven by a desire to force the government to acknowledge these victims as real people deserving of a proper burial. However, as he stitches together a makeshift corpse, the narrative takes a dark turn when this creation goes missing, leading to a series of eerie murders throughout the city.
As the plot unfolds, a horrific flesh-eating monster emerges, initially targeting the guilty but soon indiscriminately attacking anyone in its path. The story brilliantly captures the chaos and horror of a city at war, blending elements of horror, satire, and social commentary. Through Hadi's eyes, readers witness the absurdity and tragedy of life in a conflict zone, as well as the lengths to which one might go to seek recognition and justice.
Frankenstein in Baghdad not only pays homage to its literary predecessor but also serves as a poignant reflection on the human condition amidst violence and despair. It has garnered critical acclaim, winning several prestigious awards, and has been shortlisted for notable honors, solidifying its place as a remarkable work of fiction that resonates with contemporary issues.
