The superb Mitsubishi A6M Zero-sen was without doubt the world’s finest carrier fighter in 1942, but by late 1943 it had been surpassed by the heavyweight F6F Hellcat. The latter embodied the many lessons learned in combat by F4F Wildcat pilots fighting the Zero-sen in the first two years of the conflict.
