Books and newspapers and other such published materials that have served as carriers of information and knowledge are now being gradually replaced by their electronic versions. E-books and e-newspapers are gaining a lot of ground. While all this is happening due to the advent of technology, the educational sector has been immensely affected as well. The development of digital educational technology has had far reaching effects on the teaching methodologies being employed in the schools and colleges all across the world. The United States is also making great strides to make sure that it brings up a generation that would be globally competitive in this highly competitive world and would be able to face challenges from industrial giants and businesses from across the globe. For this purpose, the United States Department of Education has envisioned a National Education Technology plan which forms the basis for the advancement of the K-12 schools in the United States in terms of going through this inevitable digital transformation.
The role of libraries in this regard is worth considering. While in the few years preceding the first decade of the 21st century, the jobs of librarians were at stake and their value within the educational chain had diminished, the modern innovative digital educational technology has enabled them to act as curators of the digital content and digital resource materials in the modern age, and their roles albeit changed, have become even more important than ever before.
