Rise and Shine, Little Man cover

This memoir explores a son's deep bond with his mother while growing up in Blackpool, ultimately leading to rediscovery and healing after her loss in Rise and Shine, Little Man.

In Rise and Shine, Little Man, the author takes readers on a heartfelt journey through childhood in the vibrant seaside town of Blackpool during the 1960s. This sensitive memoir captures the essence of growing up in a loving family, where the bond between a mother and son is at the forefront. David, the youngest in his family, navigates the complexities of childhood, grappling with school, faith, and the magic of Santa Claus, all while cherishing his close relationship with his mother.

As the narrative progresses, the story takes a poignant turn when David faces the heartbreaking loss of his mother to dementia at the age of 81. This loss profoundly impacts him, leading to a period of disinterest in the things that once brought him joy. However, as he reflects on his life, unexpected events begin to guide him back to his passions—music, art, and humor. The unfolding of these events raises the question of whether someone is trying to communicate with him from beyond.

Ultimately, Rise and Shine, Little Man is a tale of rediscovery and healing. David learns to embrace the signs the universe presents, leading him toward happiness and a renewed sense of purpose. This memoir is a testament to the enduring love between a mother and son and the journey of finding faith and joy in the aftermath of loss.

I hope you don’t mind me messaging you David. I’m currently reading your book ‘Rise and Shine, Little Man’ and I absolutely love it. I’m from Blackpool myself, but I imagine even if I couldn’t relate to some of the places you mention I’d still be in admiration of this book. It warms my heart to know how much you loved your family, especially your Mum. Your overwhelming respect and adoration for her has moved me many times while reading this and you’ve balanced that beautifully with fantastic humour which has made me laugh out loud. It’s a great read. Thank you so much.
