In Centaurs Vol 1, two centaurs, Matsukaze and Kohibari, must overcome their pasts to reclaim their freedom in a world that seeks to enslave them.

Set in an alternate medieval Japan, Centaurs Vol 1 offers an epic fantasy adventure where humans coexist with the mythic jinba, half man and half horse creatures. Once revered as deities, these centaurs have fallen victim to the harsh realities of the sengoku period, facing enslavement and exploitation by humans who recognize their speed and stamina as valuable military assets. While many centaurs in the plains are captured and subjugated, those who inhabit the remote mountains remain largely free, preserving their ancient traditions and pride.

The story centers on Matsukaze, a fierce warrior jinba known as the redheaded rock tiger. His life takes a dramatic turn when he is captured while defending his son and traded to a feudal lord. In the lord's domain, he encounters Kohibari, a once proud centaur whose village was destroyed in his youth. Now a tame jinba, Kohibari has endured the loss of his arms and the spirit to escape, resigned to his fate under human control. The contrasting backgrounds of these two centaurs set the stage for a compelling journey of friendship and resilience.

In Centaurs Vol 1, the unlikely partnership between Matsukaze and Kohibari unfolds as they navigate their differences and forge a bond. Together, they embark on a quest that could lead them back to the freedom of the wilds, challenging the oppressive forces that seek to dominate their kind. Their story is a testament to the strength of unity and the enduring spirit of those who refuse to be tamed.

"This one's worth the hype, with its compelling story and artwork that blends traditional Japanese imagery with manga style, not to mention the beautifully drawn horse bodies. Dark historical fantasy doesn't get much better than this.  Grade: Overall-A, Story-A-, Art-A " - Anime News Network
