Just Math

Mathematics interacts with every aspect of our lives, but sometimes we don't see it very clearly. Just Math makes those interactions visible with subjects that are as interesting to non-math majors as they are to math majors.

Rachelle Ankney and Aaron Kaestner's Just Math focuses on social justice topics ranging from U.S. housing policies and history to voting in the U.S. and abroad. Readers figure out the personal finances of buying houses and visiting pawn shops. The authors examine the mathematics of apportioning out representatives in the U.S. Congress and uncover voting methods in democracies around the world, as well as in sports rankings and reality show contests. The publication examines various methods for dividing cakes and inheritances so that no one envies someone else's portion. Throughout, the authors use examples, homework problems, and projects that delve into real-life experiences.

Just Math is set up as a series of lecture notes to help students who may need some extra help knowing how to take notes in a math class. Students fill in important words and definitions and also have space to work examples. Tear-out review sheets are included for each chapter for students to fill out and bring to exams so they can focus on learning the concepts rather than memorizing formulas.
