This insightful work explores the ethics of sexual identity passing, challenging traditional views and proposing a new model of identity. Sexual Deceit offers fresh perspectives on complex issues.
In Sexual Deceit, the author delves into the complex ethical landscape surrounding sexual identity passing, a phenomenon where individuals present themselves as one identity while internally identifying with another. This exploration extends beyond sexual identity, touching on the nuances of identity passing across race, gender, and even religion and class. By dissecting these layers, the book challenges traditional moral perspectives on identity falsification and urges readers to reconsider their understanding of moral obligations in the face of systemic oppression.
The narrative critically examines social construction theory and its impact on contemporary political views regarding LGBT communities and activism. The author argues against prevalent models of identity, particularly the notion of performativity as articulated by Judith Butler. Instead, Sexual Deceit proposes a new framework rooted in a phenomenological understanding of style, offering a more flexible yet grounded approach to sexual identity. This innovative model seeks to accommodate the fluidity of identity while maintaining a sense of authenticity.
Furthermore, the ethical ramifications of sexual identity passing are thoughtfully explored within broader contexts, including eschatological visions of social justice and practical implications in areas such as military service, leadership roles, and sexual harassment laws. The book invites readers to engage with these pressing issues, ultimately fostering a deeper understanding of identity and ethics in today's society.
A useful study of the ever more complicated matters of passing, closeting, outing, and the like. As sex/gender issues evolve, these questions and the importance of how to approach them justly only increase. Specialized work that will evoke necessary discussion. * Water Women's Alliance *
Sexual Deceit: The Ethics of Passing shows an excellent understanding and command of the scholarship on the issues. This is particularly notable because the approaches of what I will call traditional philosophy and of queer theory are very different, and it can seem to readers as if they are speaking different languages. The author not only handles the different approaches/traditions well, but also combines their insights, key concepts, and important arguments in developing an ethical theory the author calls “Gayness as Practical Identity,” or just “Gayness.” And this serves as an ethical theory that can be applied to many issues in addition to passing. I think that this theory, which I will call a theory of gay ethics is an important contribution to ethics and LGBT studies. -- Mark Chekola, Minnesota State University Moorhead
