Drawing on research and his extensive experience in leading a team that has worked with over 1,000 schools, Daniel Sobel presents tried-and-tested strategies, tools and tips to support the welfare of and improve outcomes for the most challenged and vulnerable students, all backed by case studies and real-life examples.
Pastoral care – being responsible for the welfare and progress of all students, particularly the most vulnerable – is an essential part of any leadership or SENCO role. However, one of the most significant challenges in providing such care is being able to manage resources as well as staff, students, parents and external agencies, especially when time and money are scarce. It is all too easy for schools to expend time and money to support their most vulnerable students, but there are many solutions that can be put into practice to provide the best pastoral care as efficiently and effectively as possible.
This book is essential reading for all primary and secondary middle leaders, senior leaders and SENCOs who wish to provide the best support possible for their most vulnerable students, all while reducing pressure, stress and workload for themselves and their staff.
If the moral test of a government is how it treats its weakest members of society, then arguably we should judge our schools on the quality of care they provide for their most vulnerable children and young people. Championing and celebrating pastoral leaders, Daniel Sobel assets the foundational nature of pastoral care within our school. Based on five rules of thumb and extensive experience, Leading on Pastoral Care is a high-quality text that provides reflection for the more experienced pastoral leaders, advice and practical suggestions for those new to post, and solid foundations for those aspiring to the role. * Stephen Tierney, CEO of BEBCMAT, blogger (www.leadinglerner.me) and author of 'Liminal Leadership' *
Daniel Sobel addresses a topic that is under researched and rarely written about – that of the role of the pastoral care leader in the school context. This book is written in a very readable way and the combination of personal experience, practical suggestions and evidenced advice will make it very appealing and useful to a range of practitioners. Children learn well when they flourish, but it is hard for children to flourish without the holistic care that acknowledges that children have a range of social and emotional needs. The vignette examples in this book are excellent and revealing, and add depth, authenticity and challenge to the book. The focus around mental health is timely. The consolidation and reflection sections are excellent. They are quick, practical and aimed at maximum positive benefit. This is a very readable and practical book, and I am sure it will be an invaluable resource in any school wanting to build happy and resilient students who can be ready and able to learn and to take full advantage of their education. * Dr Anne Bamford OBE, Global Education Expert *
