This book explores the life and work of Carlos Varela, a pivotal figure in Cuban music, highlighting his impact on contemporary culture and politics.
For over three decades, musician Carlos Varela has served as a beacon for the heart, soul, and sound of Havana. My Havana delves into Varela's life and work while celebrating the vibrant musical, literary, and cinematic culture that has shaped his generation. As one of the most prominent figures to emerge from the Cuban nueva trova movement, Varela's influence extends far beyond the borders of Cuba, having toured extensively across North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. In North America, he is often referred to as 'Cuba's Bob Dylan', while in Cuba, he embodies the voice of the 1990s generation, with his songs resonating as anthems of their experiences.
The book highlights Varela's legendary status among both Cubans on the island and those in the diaspora, particularly for the intense political honesty woven into his lyrics. My Havana features contributions from writers in Canada, Cuba, the United States, and Great Britain, who use Varela's life and music to explore the cultural politics and historical context of contemporary Cuba. Notably, the book includes an extended interview with Varela and English translations of the lyrics to all his recorded songs, many of which are published for the first time.
Through personal anecdotes and critical analysis, My Havana paints a rich portrait of a musician who has captured the essence of his people's sentiments. As actor Benicio del Toro notes, Varela's music articulates the unspoken thoughts of the Cuban people, revealing profound truths that resonate deeply within the community. The book ultimately serves as a unifying narrative, bringing together scholars and fans to appreciate the cultural significance of Carlos Varela's contributions to music and society.
‘The book makes an excellent case for Varela’s cultural significance… My Havana reads like a love letter to Carlos Varela…. It makes a strong case for the inclusion of Carlos Varela in the cannon of Cuban musical greats.’
-- Julianne Graper * New West Indian Guide vol 90:2016 *‘Impressively, the book has come to exist in two versions: English and Spanish. Such a production is highly commendable, even inspirational… The book provides much of value for readers unfamiliar with Varela and Nueva Trova.’
