Historical Dictionary of Marxism cover

The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Marxism covers of the basics of Karl Marx’s thought, the philosophical contributions of later Marxist theorists, and the extensive real-world political organizations and structures his work inspired—that is, the myriad political parties, organizations, countries, and leaders who subscribed to Marxism as a creed. This text includes a chronology, an introductory essay, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, both thinkers and doers; political parties and movements; and major communist or ex-communist countries. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Marxism.

This addition to the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements series by Johnson, Walker, and Gray represents a substantial revision of the first edition, coauthored by Walker and Gray, with more than 150 pages of newly added material. The 'Chronology' section from the first edition is greatly expanded in this volume to include more details of the international impact of Marxism on political and labor movements; it is particularly compelling to see how Marxism in one country may have directly impacted its growth in another. The work also offers much more detail about Marxists and Marxist political parties in non-European countries, and provides a larger number of biographical entries. The volume concludes with a lengthy bibliography of resources that has also been updated. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers and faculty. * CHOICE *
The easily accessible and fairly analytic entries cover people, places, events, and cross-disciplinary concerns within the framework of Marxism and feature extensive cross-referencing within the title. . . .[T]his title is recommended for college, school, and public libraries. * American Reference Books Annual *
