The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland's National Theatre, and the play will run for 6 weeks from 3 June 2009 and attract considerable press coverage and promotion. Tom Murphy is one of the most important living Irish writers. Murphy is regarded as a 'literary' playwright whose plays have an appeal to Irish literature and drama students rather than just audiences of the production. The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant is a major new work billed in the Irish press as 'a visceral drama of King Lear proportions'.

She slackens her hold and loses her power to the hypocrisy and relentless grasping of her 'chosen son'. Inspired by The Golovlyov Family by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant is a haunting new work from leading Irish dramatist Tom Murphy, who has worked closely with the Abbey Theatre throughout his career. The play premiered at the Abbey Theatre, Ireland, on 3 June 2009.
