The Environmental Sustainable Development Goals in Bangladesh cover

This book examines the key Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) relating to environmental sustainability and provides a cutting-edge assessment of current progress with the view of achieving these goals by 2030.

Within South Asia, the book pays particular attention to Bangladesh, as a country representative of emerging economies which are struggling to meet their goals. Drawing on the three pillars of sustainability, the volume addresses the following goals: Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life on Land (Goals 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 and 15). The book examines where progress has been made and why some key targets have not been achieved or will be difficult to achieve. The chapters focus on environmental sustainability in different sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, fisheries and aquaculture and natural resource management.

The aim of this volume is to highlight key lessons and recommendations on how research in the various sectors can feed into the pathway of meeting the SDGs highlighted in this book. The analysis derived from Bangladesh can be used as a reference point for other developing nations in Asia, and globally, with a view to guiding policy for the achievement of the SGDs.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of sustainable development and climate change, as well as practitioners and policymakers involved in sustainable development and disaster management.

"Coastal Asia, including Bangladesh and Indonesia, is one of the most vulnerable regions facing the impacts of climate change. A number of chapters in this book focus on the problems and solutions in this region, providing valuable, well-researched insights on natural resource governance and management that will support achieving the targets for SDG 14 and SDG 15." -- Marion Glaser, Work Group Leader, Social-Ecological Systems Analysis Group, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), Germany

"...very relevant and timely publication on action based research that will help fill the gaps in gathering evidence to measure Bangladesh’s progress for fulfilling the sustainable development goals. Rich in case studies from different parts of Bangladesh, this book is relevant for students, academics and practitioners who are learning about, as well as working on, the targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030." --Saleemul Huq, Bangladesh Director, International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and Senior Fellow, Climate Change, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Bangladesh

"The issue of environmental sustainability is very important for Bangladesh since we are on the path to be recognized as a developing country. I believe the research findings of this book will be of great use to the scientific community, academics, professionals, practitioners, local government bodies and particularly to policy-makers to formulate long-term policies and strategies in addressing environmental sustainability in Bangladesh." -- Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Environment and Forests (Moef), Government of The People’s Republic of Bangladesh

"Having the experience to educate students and young researchers from Bangladesh, I came to deeply know about the serious environmental issues affecting the country. The initiatives and ideas exposed in the present book are of crucial importance to inspire governmental authorities, policymakers and citizens of Bangladesh to be included in Sustainable Development Goals." -- Beatriz E. Casareto, Professor, Research Institute of Green Science and Technology and Graduate School of Science and Technology, Shizuoka University, Japan

"Addressing the concerns of environmental sustainability remains one of the major delivery challenges of the 2030 Agenda. The scholarly contributions contained in the volume, with impressive conceptual clarity and analytical depth, expose these challenges in the context of a dynamic developing country. These contributions will definitely enlighten efforts to embed dimensions of environmental sustainability in policies relating to inclusive growth and social cohesion." -- Debapriya Bhattacharya, Chair, Southern Voice Network of Think Tanks and Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Bangladesh
