This new volume comprehensively addresses the key questions regarding Islamic Radicalisation.
Islamic radicalisation is widely understood as the cognitive and ideological framework and denominator for the creation of a worldview that is not only incompatible with, but openly hostile to the principles of pluralism, freedom of expression and democracy itself. Our knowledge of Islamic Radicalisation as a historical and contemporary sociological phenomenon is rather limited, however. This bookis intended to provide an accessible yet sophisticated introduction to all the key topics of radicalisation, not only by addressing contemporary developments but the historical roots and development of the movement as well. It addresses the main challenges posed by Islamic radicalisation to Western states, not only representing societal and political concerns but also making a genuine effort to understand the appeal of Islamic radicalisation to young people, who have undergone comprehensive socialisation in the democratic and welfare states of Europe.
The volume is organized into five sections:
Part I: Concepts, offers conceptual clarifications and definitional elaborations of Islamic Radicalisation, making a distinction between Radical Islamism and other similar concepts;
Part II:The Classical Roots of Islamic Radicalisation, describes the classical roots of Islamic Radicalisation, and describes Islam as both a religion and a religious ideology;
Part III: Contemporary History of Islamic Radicalisation, goes through the recent history of Islamic Radicalisation, analysing the milestones in the period from 1979 (Iranian revolution) to 2015;
Part IV:The Organization of Radical Islamism, focuses on mainstream (host) society migration and integration policies and value conflicts and radical Muslims’ strategies;
Part V:Radicalization, Migration and Integration, focuseson the organization of Radical Islamism, recruitment, finance, relation to gangs in deprived urban areas, gender and class conflicts.
This book will be of great interest to students of radicalisation, political violence, radical Islam, security studies and IR.
