The material used was collected by the author during a two-month stay on the island in 1921, whilst holding the position of Assistant Anthropologist to the Papuan Government. Although it was originally intended as a general survey, the text devotes special attention to aspects of life on the island that had been insufficiently analysed in past studies – a complicated network of social relationships and a monetary system. It is also notable for containing an introduction by the renowned anthropological pioneer Alfred Cort Haddon (1855–1940), along with numerous illustrative figures. This is a fascinating book that will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of anthropology and Melanesian cultures.
