Violent Capitalism and Hybrid Identity in the Eastern Congo cover

This book analyses the radical political transformation of eastern Congo through the lens of cross-border risk management.

This book discusses the radical transformation of eastern Congo's political order in the context of apparent armed destruction and state weakness. Looking beyond the dominant paradigms, it analyses the institutional changes resulting from strategies of daily risk management in an environment characterised by violent competition across country borders. This book discusses the radical transformation of eastern Congo's political order in the context of apparent armed destruction and state weakness. Looking beyond the dominant paradigms, the author critically assesses the premises of this region's presumed collapse into chaos. He traces violent rule patterns back to a tumultuous history of extra-economic accumulation, armed rebellion and de facto public authority in the margins of regional power plays. Rather than curing the world's ills, the originality of this book lies in its neat focus on cultural and economic uncertainty. It answers the question of what institutional changes are the result of strategies of daily risk management in an environment characterised by violent competition over the right to govern.

'… a welcome addition to our knowledge of contemporary political practices and a necessary corrective to assumptions about politics in general and African politics in particular.' Dr Jack David Eller, Anthropology Review Database (wings.buffalo.edu/ARD)
'Raeymaekers engages with several theoretical debates and deploys a broad spectrum of concepts. This eclectic theoretical style opens up a wealth of thought-provoking perspectives on the political economy of violent political orders. … the book represents a remarkable contribution to the study of violent political orders and the political economy of conflict. It is built on extensive field research and unique historical material and is exceptionally well researched.' Kasper Hoffann, The Journal of Modern African Studies
'In Violent Capitalism and Hybrid Identity in the Eastern Congo, Timothy Raeymaekers provides a compelling and nuanced account of the dynamic border region shared by the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, which has not been ruled effectively by any de jure sovereign state authority in decades.' Vanessa van den Boogaard, African Studies Quarterly
