The new translation of Hermann Rorschach’s Psychodiagnostics is a momentous event in the world of Rorschach. Rorschach’s test has remained, in the 100 years since his untimely death, a major beacon of American clinical psychology and personality assessment and has achieved the status of a fascinating cultural icon in the popular imagination. The new translation is not merely a rendering of the original document published in 1921. Rather, the new edition includes features that result in more than a lucid rendering of Rorschach’s difficult text, and it is a scholarly archive that allows for critical appreciation of Rorschach’s historical, conceptual, and biographical sources. The new translation includes a glossary of terms, bibliography of Rorschach’s publications, and of utmost value and significance, a series of fascinating and detailed annotations for each chapter. [It] is written in contemporary vernacular and situates key terminology in the context of Rorschach’s historical era and academic influences. The current translation was conducted by scholars and clinicians deeply acquainted with Rorschach history and clinical psychology. Their backgrounds provide unusual depth and power in conveying Rorschach’s concepts and clinical theory. Readers will note significant differences in terminology that are the product of careful translation decisions. An example of the group’s attention to careful collaborative translation is in their decisions in translating critical concepts. The bound volume is quite handsome from an esthetic point of view, richly annotated and contextualized and printed on glossy paper. The translation is continuously cogent … and offers historical context that was lacking in the original translation attempt. It is difficult to overestimate the significance of the new translation of Psychodiagnostics for contemporary Rorschach science and historiography. The new translation no doubt presents lucid access to Rorschach’s magnum opus for new generations of trainees, clinicians, and researchers into the next century.; Reviewed by Marvin W. Completely new translation of Rorschach's Psychodiagnostics Newly translated and annotated by experts from the field New introductory chapters Illustrated with photos and drawings from the archivesThis new English translation and 100th anniversary annotated edition of Psychodiagnostics, the only book published by Hermann Rorschach, showcases Rorschach's empiricism and the wide-ranging flexibility of his thinking - and thus helps us to understand why his iconic inkblot test has survived for a century and is still being used around the world, with the support of a strong evidence base. The expert translation team have collaborated closely to create an accessible rendition of Hermann Rorschach's presentation of the inkblot test that resulted from his empirical research experiments. Also included in this edition is the case study lecture on new developments in the test that Rorschach gave to the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society in 1922, just six weeks before his premature death. His book and the lecture are each accompanied by annotations for the first time, looking backward to the sources of Rorschach's terminology and also forward to how the test is used today. Drawings and photographs from the Rorschach Archive as well as introductory chapters on the history of the translation and the creation of Psychodiagnostics bring the story of this important figure and his work to life. This volume is essential reading for both historians and contemporary users of the inkblot test and anyone interested in exploring personality testing.
This wonderful work is a masterful replacement for the 1942 English translation of Hermann Rorschach's Psychodiagnostics. This book will enrich all English-speaking Rorschach users. For anyone who owns the former translation, it is a must-have replacement!; Gregory J. Meyer, PhD, Professor of Psychology, University of Toledo, OH, USA; Co-Developer, Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS); This new and innovative English edition of Psychodiagnostics has been translated, edited, and annotated with great care, making this an enjoyable read. New chapters and annotations written by the editors provide important insights into the creation and history of Rorschach's theoretical model as well as little-known facts about Hermann Rorschach himself, while also encouraging readers to see familiar concepts in a new light. It is sure to promote renewed interest in Rorschach's method and ideas, which are still relevant today."; Fernando Silberstein, PhD, President of the International Society of the Rorschach and Projective Methods (ISR); "The need for a new English-language edition of Hermann Rorschach's Psychodiagnostics that meets today's linguistic and historical standards has been brilliantly fulfilled by the scholarly team of translators and editors, who provide scrupulous explanations for their translations of key Rorschach terminology and a wealth of intriguing contextualizing information. ";Mark S. Micale, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA; I would strongly recommend this book to all Rorschach users. It provides a description of Hermann Rorschach and of the cultural and scientific background in which the test was created, and is written in a language adapted to contemporary psychological thinking. The central part is the new translation of the Hermann Rorschach masterpiece Psychodiagnostics (1921), which is presented in a fresh, relatable, and clear language. But it is much more than that. The authors include additional relevant material that goes well beyond the translation ... the biography of Hermann Rorschach, an analysis of the writings that preceded the 1921 book, a translation of a lecture by Hermann Rorschach on the relationship between the test and psychoanalysis that was published right after the publication of the book, a glossary collecting the terms used in the translation, a list of publications from Hermann Rorschach, and a section on the annotations to the translation. The amount of material included in this volume speaks of the monumental effort made by the authors to provide readers with the most complete, accurate, and up-to-date publication possible.; Filippo Aschieri, PhD, European Center for Therapeutic Assessment, Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy, in Rorschachiana (2022), 43, 89-94; In the 1947 translation of Rorschach's work, the translation method resulted in rendering the text in a word-by-word way. As a result, all the semantics of the original language were lost. We have here a "New Rorschach." This is a masterful piece in translation [that] recreates the full world of meanings that the original German text conveys. The result is a [like] a painting that has been cleaned of varnish and patina and makes it possible to rediscover the painting anew, with the full vivacity and palette of its colors, while having at the same time a feeling of being on a firm, well-known ground.The centerpiece is the English translation, with its best rendering of the deep meanings expressed by Rorschach. But all the material that frames this translation, from the introductory biography and genesis of sychodiagnostik to Rorschach's preparatory publications and explanatory notes, transforms this translation into a complete file on Rorschach's method.; Alain Touwaide, PhD, Ronin Institute, in Doody's Reviews (September 2022);
