Proto-Austronesian Phonology with Glossary cover

This work examines the evolution of words in Austronesian languages, focusing on their origins and phonological changes over time in Proto-Austronesian Phonology with Glossary.

This comprehensive work, titled Proto-Austronesian Phonology with Glossary, is divided into two volumes and explores the intricate history of words in the Austronesian (An) languages. It delves into their origins in Proto-Austronesian (PAn) and traces their evolution into the forms we recognize in contemporary An languages. The study meticulously reconstructs the sound system (phonology) of PAn, providing insights into the sound laws that governed the transformation of original sounds into their modern counterparts.

The primary objective of Proto-Austronesian Phonology with Glossary is to thoroughly examine the forms that can be reconstructed for PAn, as well as for the earliest stages of An languages as they spread southward from Taiwan. While it aims for exhaustiveness in the reconstruction of protomorphemes, the work also selectively addresses forms from later stages, focusing on those that are significant in historical An linguistics. This approach ensures a deeper understanding of how these forms emerged and the processes that led to linguistic change over time.

Volume 2 is structured into four parts and includes valuable resources such as a glossary, finder lists from the English translation, a bibliography, and an index. This organization enhances the utility of the work for researchers and linguists interested in the historical development of Austronesian languages and their phonological systems.

"We have before us a study of unprecedented proportions. Presentation of Wolff's Proto-Austronesian phonology is continued by thirty-seven chapters detailing the evolution of the system-regularities and irregularities-into as many languages (Dempwolff's eleven, plus twenty-six 'new' languages, including nearly all the Austronesian languages currently spoken in Taiwan; several known to him from personal fieldwork); this is followed by a Glossary of c. 2000 reconstructed etyma (about half of thema ssigned to a level above Malayo-Polynesian), with full supporting evidence, notes and cross-references to relevant sections in the Proto-Austronesian phonology chapter. The book ends with all the indexes, registers, and finder lists the most exacting reader could wish for."-Laurent Sagrat, Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique
