A young boy discovers his selkie heritage and embarks on a quest to save his family in Magnus Fin and the Moonlight Mission.
In Magnus Fin and the Moonlight Mission, readers are introduced to Magnus Fin, a young boy who is part selkie, part human. On his eleventh birthday, he learns about his unique heritage and the extraordinary abilities that come with it, such as breathing underwater. This revelation sets the stage for an adventurous quest that intertwines his human life with his selkie roots.
The story takes a turn when Magnus discovers his initials etched into the rocks by the shore, a sign that his selkie family is in dire need of help. As he encounters troubling signs, including dead seals washing ashore, Magnus realizes that something sinister is affecting his loved ones. The great seal sickness has struck, and with his grandmother Miranda gravely ill, he is determined to uncover the truth behind the affliction.
Equipped with only a moonstone, his last baby tooth, and some seaweed from Neptune's garden, Magnus embarks on a perilous journey into the depths of the ocean. Along the way, he is joined by his best friend Tarkin, who, despite his inability to swim, is eager to support Magnus in this critical mission. Together, they navigate the challenges that lie beneath the waves, uncovering secrets that could change everything for both their worlds.
'Janis Mackay's environmental message is clear but does not swamp her eminently readable story.'
