This volume presents a critical edition, English translation, and insightful essays focused on the initial section of the Kasikavrtti, which dates back to the 7th century CE. As the oldest complete commentary on Panini's Astadhyayi, it serves as a vital resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike. This work marks the first significant outcome of an international project dedicated to producing a comprehensive critical edition of the Kasikavrtti, authored by Jayaditya and Vamana. The project aims to shed light on this essential text and its historical context.

The first phase of this endeavor culminates in the critical edition of the Kasika's initial section, which is primarily devoted to the 'Pratyaharasutras'—the foundational rules for abbreviations. The editors collaborated closely with Professor Saroja Bhate, a renowned Paninian scholar, to ensure the accuracy and depth of this edition. Accompanying the text is a thorough description of the manuscripts that were collated, along with an annotated English translation and various editorial contributions discussing the history of the Kasikavrtti’s editions and its textual sources.

In the latter part of the book, diverse authors explore a range of theoretical, historical, and methodological topics. These discussions include the Kasika's historical significance, its relationship with the influential Mahabhasya of Patanjali, and comparisons with the Candravrtti. Additionally, the influence of Bhartrhari on the Kasika and the invocations from the manuscripts are examined, providing a rich tapestry of insights into this foundational text.
