This text includes, but moves beyond, tradition-based experiential writing by turning to the academic study of religion. It includes work that compares or focuses on different religious traditions, such as various forms of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Native American spiritualities. It also incorporates writing on various geographical areas and historical time periods. By assuming a wide definition of religion, it raises questions about the terms religion and religious themselves.
An ambitious anthology. It is the first and still the only volume to attempt such breadth, and as such it is an extremely important contribution to scholars and teachers with a central or even a passing interest in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies in religion. Many of the articles are accessible for the introductory college level or even high school, while others are sophisticated enough to prove useful to graduate students. A useful reference and sourcebook. -- Melissa M. Wilcox * Sociology of Religion *
This is a very useful anthology for the study of religion, gender and sexuality. -- Prof. Dr. Burkhad Scherer, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK
