This collection of essays offers a comparative analysis of the position of women in North America, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean and in India as well as in various African countries. Based on the belief that women's position in society is best understood in comparative terms, and that development strategies for women should be informed by an international feminist perspective, the authors are particularly concerned with placing issues of gender, race and ethnicity in a comparative perspective and with considering the similarities and differences between women in various parts of the world. Co-published with Dalhousie University Press.
The collection successfully meets its objective without use of a unified feminist treatment of issues. The book would be extremely good for African history classes. It provides excellent country synopses which incorporate subjects not usually addressed. * International Journal of African Historical Studies *
This collection of articles represents an important contribution to the study of women and development, with particular emphasis on Anglophone Africa. * Development and Change *
This book contains a number of excellent essays that will be of interest to Africanists. -- Dr. Sharon Stichter, Department of Sociology, University of Massachusetts, Boston, Massachusetts * Development and Change *
This collection of essays is broader in its perspective than its title, including essays about women and development efforts in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa and India....The conference from which this book was derived was a notable effort...and Jane Parpart is to be commended for bringing it to us. * African Studies Review *
