The Poems of Michael Wigglesworth cover

Known principally for his ballad of judgement day, The Day of Doom, Michael Wigglesworth actually produced more than seventy additional poems during pre-Revolutionary America. This collection presents all of Wigglesworth's known poems and is prefaced by extensive introductory essays on his reputation and on the historical and theological contexts in which he wrote. Given the emphasis today in early-American studies on revisionism, this edition will serve students and scholars by providing them the means to begin the needed reassessment of Wigglesworth's poetic talent and of his place in the history of American letters.

Even though Bosco's edition of the complete extant verse may not make us like Wigglesworth, it will certainly help us come to better terms with him. -- Jeffrey Hammond, St. Marys College of Maryland * CHOICE *
By giving us an exceptionally well edited edition of all of Wigglesworth's poems as well as the fine introductory essay, this book is one of the two or three most important aids to our understanding of Puritan poetics to appear in the last twenty-five years. Long overdue, at last it is done superbly. -- Frank Shuffelton, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY * CHOICE *
...a welcome resource for students of American literature, history, and religion. -- Carla Mulford, Pennsylvania State University * CHOICE *
Professor Bosco's edition of Michael Wigglesworth's poems is a long-awaited and important addition to the scholarly treatment of works from the Colonial period of American literature. -- Adelaide P. Amore, Southern Connecticut State University * CHOICE *
A superb piece of editing with an authoritative and convincing introduction for this long neglected distinctly American poet....A must acquisition for every American literature collection. -- Leo F. O'Connor, Professor and Director of American Studies, Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut * CHOICE *
...fills a glaring gap in the library of Puritan literature. The editor's introduction surveys the (rather dismal) critical heritage, offers sensible suggestions for an 'open-minded reading' of the poems, and supplies a chronology of Wigglesworth's life. * CHOICE *
