Culture, Ethnicity, and Justice in the South cover

Proceedings of the Southern Anthropological Society No. 1, Essays on Medical Anthropology (1968); No. 2, Urban Anthropology: Research Perspectives and Strategies (1968); No. 3, Concepts and Assumptions in Contemporary Anthropology (1969); No. 4, The Not So Solid South: Anthropological Studies in a Regional Subculture (1971); and No. 5, Red, White, and Black: Symposium on Indians in the Old South (1971), originally distributed by the University of Georgia Press, are all combined herein with a historical overview in the new introduction and with a new index to the complete anthology.

The first five volumes of the SAS Proceedings show that we had nerve, with essays on two new areas of anthropology, at that time, as well as a survey of current theoretical thought. We also had substance, with papers on many of the socio-cultural nooks and crannles of the South. Where else, for example, can you find intelligent instruction on how to escape through a swamp, throwing the sheriff and his hounds off your trail? - Charles Hudson, University of Georgia
