The Mummy in Fact, Fiction and Film cover

In 1922, when Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, much of what was then known about mummies came from the writing of Greek historian Herodotus and from the paintings on the walls of Egyptian tombs. Even before 1922, the mummy had been the subject of fiction, with such writers as Bram Stoker and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tackling the subject, and early films dating back to 1901. In this work, the authors present the religious, social and scientific aspects of mummies as well as an in-depth discussion of facts about them (largely Egyptian, but including other kinds of mummies). Then, how mummies are portrayed in fiction and in the movies is discussed. Stories and films in which the mummy is a focal character are listed.

“uncover[s] ancient Egyptian history...photos of authentic sites and relics are fascinating...recommend[ed]”—Classic Images; “a book ideally suited to satiate the modern mania for more on the Mummy...fully details the history of mummification in ancient societies and the major archeological discoveries”—Big Reel; “strongly recommended”—Cult Movies; “a real treasure...interesting nuggets about all the Universal and Hammer entries...comprehensive”—Hitch; “exceptional read...buy it”—Little Shoppe of Horrors; “brisk and informative...every mummy movie is catalogued and discussed in satisfying detail...nicely illustrated with plenty of rare stills”—Film Review; “in-depth”—Gadflyonline; “detailed”—The Burlington County Times; “cinemaphiles, attracted to this book by its ‘Mummy in Film’ aspect, will also gain a good deal of non-movie insight about actual and fictional mummies”—Video Watchdog.
