Sustainable mobility has become the new imperative for transport policy. There have been a number of policy attempts at sustainable mobility globally, such as the development of more efficient conventional transport technologies, the promotion of efficient and affordable public transport systems and the encouragement of environmental awareness. Such policies have so often been presented as prerequisites for sustainable mobility that they are now taken for granted. But are any of these policies really successful? To what extent do they actually contribute (or fail to contribute) to sustainable mobility? Why do some policies succeed and others fail? Using an interdisciplinary approach which brings together various theories and methodologies, this book tests each of these policies - or hypotheses, as the author sees them - with detailed empirical investigations. It also argues that leisure-time travel should be included in any sustainable mobility policies, as it now accounts for 50 per cent of all annual travel distance in developed countries. The book concludes by suggesting fourteen theses of sustainable mobility for the EU and a new model for future best practice.
"An important contribution to the scientific study of how to achieve sustainable mobility, this book provides well-founded and up-dated estimates of the effects of various measures intended to promote the necessary transformation of existing transport systems." - Emin Tengstram, University of Gateborg, Sweden
"This is an important, timely and challenging book, which takes hold of the evidence to explode a number of myths about transportation and sustainability, and provides a very significant insight into the realities of mobility. This book shines a light on ways forward that are realistic, achievable, and which might significantly help alleviate some of the causes of global warming. It is a must read for all involved in issues of sustainable development, transport and mobility." - Mike Jenks, Oxford institute for Sustainable Development (OISD), Oxford Brookes University
"The overall impressions after reading the book are very positive. The author has gone through very extensive research work and gives a complete overview of sustainable mobility, its current situation and future prospects... It is well written and readable, whilst maintaining its scientific integrity." - Urban Studies Journal
