Few Welsh scholars in the modern era have served their profession, university and country as admirably as Sir Glanmor Williams, who died, aged eighty four, on 24 February 2005. By dint of intellectual brilliance, far-sighted vision and exceptional personal charm, he achieved great eminence in the field of Welsh historical studies. It is no exaggeration to claim that the flourishing condition of Welsh history during the last half century is in large measure attributable to his influence. This book seeks to draw out the religious, political, economic, social and educational threads in his work within a local, county, national and British context. It also examines his methodology in the context of the work of other historians within Wales and beyond.
'The volume is most attractively produced - a real credit to the University of Wales Press - and contains no fewer than twenty photographs, many highly evocative and of great charm, which admirably complement the themes of the various chapters. Sir Glanmor would undoubtedly have been immensely proud of it all.' J. Graham Jones, Planet 'It is an instructive and absorbing book, beautifully and authoritatively written by historians who are well qualified to portray the man and to assess his work. With its clever mix of biography, affectionate appreciation and penetrating appraisal, Degrees of Influence will do much to secure Glanmor Williams his rightful place in the pantheon of Welsh historians who have followed in the tradition founded by Sir John Edward Lloyd in the early years of the twentieth century.'
