The Language Of Song: Elementary (High Voice) cover

"The Language of Song: Elementary (High Voice)" is a comprehensive resource that features 18 classic songs from Italian, German, and French repertoires. Authored by Heidi Pegler and Nicola-Jane Kemp, this book is designed to help singers develop the essential skills needed to perform in foreign languages. Recognizing the gap in vocal training materials that address this need, the authors, who are experienced examiners and professional singers, have compiled a graded series of songbooks that focus on classic pieces while enhancing language proficiency.

Each song in the collection is accompanied by both literal and poetic translations, as well as a detailed pronunciation guide based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). This structure not only aids in understanding the lyrics but also provides valuable technical and musical insights. Additionally, the included CD features native speakers articulating the text and offers piano accompaniments performed by renowned pianist John Lenehan, further enriching the learning experience.

This collection is an excellent tool for singing students and teachers alike, suitable for individuals preparing for graded singing exams or those simply interested in exploring international song repertoires. With a focus on building confidence and effectiveness in singing foreign language pieces, "The Language of Song" celebrates the beauty of diverse musical traditions. Recognized as 'Best Educational Publication' at the 2007 Music Industries Association Awards, this book remains a vital resource for aspiring vocalists.

This excellent anthology series is a good source for reference, study, and performance.

Journal of Singing (National Association of Teachers of Singing), May 2010

These books offer a very valuable learning experience; they are very carefully thought out, and offer the best introduction to singing in other languages that I have come across. If I mention the fact that nearly all the pieces are to be found in the examination syllabi of the ABRSM and the Trinity Guildhall, do not be tempted to look at them simply as exam material. This very practical consideration means that the books may well be bought with a specific exam piece in mind, but they will then be used and studied by both teachers and students long after.
