T&T Clark Handbook of Modern Theology cover

This handbook provides an in-depth exploration of modern theology, detailing key movements, figures, and texts that have shaped the field over time.

This book serves as a comprehensive research companion for those delving into the study of modern theology. It explores significant contexts, developmental trajectories, movements of thought, key figures, and essential texts that have shaped Christian theology from the Enlightenment to the present day. The work is structured into two main parts, with the first focusing on the various contexts, trajectories, movements, and concerns that characterize modern theology, while the second part examines the influential theologians of this period.

A unique cross-referencing system is employed to connect related articles across both sections, allowing readers to navigate easily between topics. Additionally, a glossary of key terms and concepts is provided, along with a bibliography that lists pertinent primary and secondary sources at the end of the volume. This thoughtful organization enhances the book’s usability for both students and scholars alike.

The contributors to this handbook represent a diverse and ecumenical range of voices, bringing together essays from leading scholars in the field. This makes the book not only a valuable resource for academic research but also an insightful guide for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of modern theological discourse.

Ziegler and Nelson have completed a gigantic task by publishing this magnificent volume. They have entrusted excellent scholars no less than 54 themes and 88 key figures of modern theology, which makes this volume the comprehensive work all students of modern theology must turn to. The themes vary from the roots of modern theology in the early modern reformations via philosophical backgrounds to various regional and confessional emphases. The key figures include the obvious 19th century philosophers and theologians as well as an impressive selection of theologians from the 20th and 21st centuries, reflecting the movement from theology as a largely European affair to a global endeavour. This volume presents a rich diversity of discussions and of conversation partners, which sets the standard as an overview for the years to come. The bibliographies at the end of chapters make this volume an excellent entryway for further study. While even a massive volume such as this cannot discuss each and every voice in modern theology, I am impressed by the scope and depth of what Ziegler and Nelson offer. * Arnold Huijgen, Protestant Theological University, The Netherlands *
With its broad coverage of problems, themes, and contexts, this volume admirably captures the diversity within modern Christian theology. Reflecting upon leading thinkers and trends, the editors have assembled a collection of unrivalled scope. This promises to be an invaluable resource. * David Fergusson, University of Cambridge, UK *
