In Blood Count, the story unfolds as surgeon Edward Hammond finds himself entangled in a web of past decisions and present dangers. Thirteen years ago, he saved the life of Serbian gangster Dragan Gazi, a choice that now haunts him as Gazi stands trial for war crimes at the international court in The Hague. The aftermath of Hammond's life-saving operation led to Gazi's men committing atrocities during the Balkan civil wars, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. Now, Gazi's family demands a favor in exchange for keeping Hammond's secret, thrusting him back into a world he thought he had left behind.

Hammond's task is to locate Marco Piravani, an elusive Italian financier who holds the key to understanding what happened to Gazi's money. However, Piravani is not easy to find, and just when Hammond thinks he has tracked him down, Piravani vanishes once more. This sets Hammond on a frantic journey across Europe, where he must confront the ghosts of his past while racing against time to uncover the truth.
