This 1996 book contains basic materials relating to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor.
This 1996 book reproduces the basic materials relating to the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia, the development of the dispute following the international community's response to it, and, finally, to the 1995 judgment of the International Court of Justice in the case concerning East Timor between Portugal and Australia. The long-running dispute over East Timor was for many years an unresolved item on the agenda of the international community. It involved issues of self-determination, non-recognition, and human rights. This book was first published in 1996, five years before East Timor regained its independence. It thus serves as a record of the basic materials relating to the historical background, to the circumstances of the Indonesian invasion and following incorporation of East Timor, to the subsequent development of the dispute in the light of the international community's response to it, and, finally, to the 1995 judgment of the International Court of Justice in the case concerning East Timor between Portugal and Australia. The volume contains a substantive introduction which places the documents in context and provides an overview of the political and legal issues of the dispute.
"The volume's source materials are indispensable for researchers in the field." H.S. Albinski, Choice
"While Indonesia continues to suffer increasing international opprobrium over East Timor, those interested in this unresolved dispute have the opportunity to become fully cognizant of the background and international reaction to the controversy." Daniel C. Turack, Journal of Third World Studies
"As the tenth volume in the Cambridge International Documents Series this book provides a magnificent compilation of many of the most important source materials relating to the issue of East Timor. It is essential work for any serious discussion, and without doubt constitutes the definitive text to date, with a handsome appearance and pleasing format enhancing its authority." David Hicks, Asian Thought and Society
