This book looks at Rome through its old bourgeoisie, whose relationship to the city in a very real sense embodies an important aspect of 'time-full' Rome, Rome as a local fatherland, the idealized image of Rome Eternal as a symbolic community tied to traditions of civilta, civilized values.
