This anthology introduces English-speaking readers to the often-overlooked richness of Spanish philosophy, featuring key thinkers and their ideas. Other Voices bridges cultural gaps in philosophical discourse.
This anthology provides English-speaking audiences with a curated selection of significant works from Spanish philosophical thought. Historically, English-speaking philosophers have focused more on German and French traditions, often overlooking the rich contributions from Spain. The anthology seeks to bridge this gap by introducing key figures and ideas that have shaped Spanish philosophy over the centuries.
Other Voices showcases a diverse array of philosophers, spanning nearly two millennia. From early thinkers in Roman Hispania to influential twentieth-century figures, the anthology highlights the evolution of philosophical discourse in Spain. John R. Welch has meticulously chosen excerpts from thirteen prominent philosophers, including Seneca, Ibn Rushd, and José Ortega y Gasset, accompanied by insightful introductions that contextualize their work and significance.
Among the notable selections in Other Voices is a passage from Feijóo's A Defense of Women, which confronts misogyny and has remained untranslated for centuries. The anthology also explores the moral complexities of war through the perspectives of Vitoria and Las Casas, reflecting on their experiences during the Spanish conquest. Unamuno's emphasis on the importance of the concrete over the abstract further enriches the collection, inviting readers to engage with these philosophical ideas in a meaningful way.
“For the past few decades there has been a growing interest in Latin American philosophy, Hispanic/Latino philosophical issues, and Hispanic/Latino studies throughout North American universities. Because a significant part of the foundations of Latin American philosophy can be traced to Spanish philosophy, the increased interest in the former has naturally spilled over into the latter. This book, therefore, will be an essential resource not only for those interested in the history of philosophy but also for those engaged in the growing fields of Latin American philosophy and Hispanic/Latino studies.“ —Benardo J. Cantens, Moravian College
“A long overdue resource for scholars and for instructors in courses in the history of philosophy, this anthology makes available to English-speakers a concise collection of some monumental works of Spanish philosophical thought. It deserves a wide readership.” —Gary Seay, City University of New York
“This collection is a welcome addition to the almost nonexistent number of collections of philosophy texts in English from Spain. It should be of use to students of philosophy and Spanish literature and intellectual history, and also to scholars from other disciplines who specialize in these areas of the world.” —Jorge J. E. Gracia, State University of New York, University at Buffalo
"Spanning two millenia, this indispensable and highly readable collection presents the classic foundations of Spanish thought, ranging from Seneca to Unamuno and Ortega. The author provides useful and focused introductions to periods and authors along with some important new translations." —Amy A. Oliver, American University
"This excellent collection breaks a silence that effectively has kept the Spanish-language voices of philosophy isolated from the dialogues that shape the field. Its broad historical sweep provides a good overview of the rich contributions made by philosophers from the Iberian peninsula . . . . This collection is a welcome addition to the growing literature on Spanish-language philosophy.” —Choice
