The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Perception is a survey by leading philosophical thinkers of contemporary issues and new thinking in philosophy of perception. It includes sections on the history of the subject, introductions to contemporary issues in the epistemology, ontology and aesthetics of perception, treatments of the individual sense modalities and of the things we perceive by means of them, and a consideration of how perceptual information is integrated and consolidated. New analytic tools and applications to other areas of philosophy are discussed in depth. Each of the forty-five entries is written by a leading expert, some collaborating with younger figures; each seeks to introduce the reader to a broad range of issues. All contain new ideas on the topics covered; together they demonstrate the vigour and innovative zeal of a young field. The book is accessible to anybody who has an intellectual interest in issues concerning perception.
Matthen (Univ. of Toronto) has assembled a superb collection of 45 original, uniformly high-quality essays...Matthen is to be especially commended for taking such a broad approach to perception...The contributors constitute a very impressive group of international scholars, and for the most part they strike exactly the right balance in terms of accessbility: the essays will be suitable for students and still of interest to scholars. Experts in the field will find many provocative new insights in this collection...Highly Recommended. * A. Kind, CHOICE *
Mohan Matthen has done an incredible job of piecing together and organizing a very healthy collection of top-tier articles, many of which make original contributions and most of which serve as excellent introductions to topics in both the philosophy of perception (and the philosophy of mind, more generally.) The handbook is very strong on the science and metaphysics of perception ... Buy this book. It earns its keep and deserves (lots of) space on your shelf. * Scott Hagaman, Metapsychology Online Reviews *
