Through a variety of geographical examples, this book offers a comprehensive overview that serves as a solid foundation for anyone looking to delve deeper into the subject. The diversity found in aquatic systems is remarkable, ranging from the rushing waters of mountain streams to the vastness of deep oceans, and from tranquil lakes to the vital estuaries that bridge rivers and seas. Despite their unique attributes, these systems share fundamental ecological properties that reveal their interconnectedness.
Beginning with an exploration of the various types of aquatic systems and their interrelations, the Ecology of Aquatic Systems emphasizes the rich biodiversity within these habitats. It delves into critical aquatic environments, stressing the ecological themes that resonate throughout each system. The writing is tailored for students, maintaining a clear and concise style that was well-received in the first edition. The book includes helpful cross-references, a detailed glossary, and a comprehensive index to enhance reader engagement and comprehension.
Given the increasing global significance of aquatic systems and the urgent need for their effective management, understanding these ecosystems has never been more crucial. The Ecology of Aquatic Systems is designed to be the perfect companion for students, equipping them with the essential knowledge to navigate this vital field. Additionally, an Online Resource Centre offers valuable tools for both educators and students, including downloadable figures and a test bank for assessments.
Review from previous edition In my view the main strength of this book is its success in bringing together the whole of aquatic ecology in sufficient depth and breadth. All this within some 200pp (edition 1) and with excellent graphics. * Jan Vermaat, Institute for Environmental Studies, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam *
The style is just right and provides a good balance of generality and specific case studies. The level is also good and the style doesn't rely too heavily on jargon, which makes the book accessible. I feel that the quality of descriptions of the various issues and case studies is excellent - very clear and concise. * Simon Rundle, School of Biological Sciences, University of Plymouth *
