Assuming no prior knowledge or experience, this textbook provides an up to date introduction to the key concepts and issues within the field of learning and development. Blending key theories and concepts with a practical approach, the text covers the core areas that line managers and HRD practitioners need to know in order to design, implement and evaluate formal training interventions. In addition to these core areas, more contemporary issues such as learning and development within small and medium sized enterprises, and the sharing and management of knowledge are outlined. Having reviewed the first four chapters, this recent material gives a clear indication of the contribution that this text will make to the field. Chapters five to nine get into the 'nuts and bolts' of the subject and in my view, do so in a way that will appeal to undergraduates and postgraduate readership who may be coming to the topic for the first time. In reading these chapters I was interested to see that some were quite detailed - maybe excessively so. Then, thinking about our undergraduate students, I was reminded that they do not necessarily have the experiential 'hooks' for the details of L&D needs, design and evaluation.
