A World of Private Higher Education cover

A World of Private Higher Education is the definitive treatment of a sector accounting for a third of the world's 200 million higher education enrolment--yet remaining largely unknown even to scholars of higher education and widely mis-characterized when it is considered by stakeholders or the general public. Beyond the eye-popping numbers, several inter-related thematic findings regarding the Private and the Public underscore the subject matter's importance. First, private-public differences are significant-it matters that so many students are in a sector that not long ago was only marginal in much of the world. Second, private higher education (PHE) itself is increasingly diverse, with significant and private-private differences. Third, the overlaying of the first two realities yields increasing diversity in private-public higher education distinctions. Especially for its pioneering mapping of PHE globally, regionally, and nationally, the book draws on the pioneering dataset of the pioneering scholarly program for research on PHE (Program for Research on Private Higher Education). Unprecedented in geographical scope, the dataset is unprecedented in longitudinal coverage too, dating back to 2000. Empirical methods allow for extensive analysis, and theoretical analysis draws on key private-public concepts embedded in literatures on privatization, nonprofit studies, and policy models. For the major challenge of penetrating inside the increasingly diverse private sector of higher education, Levy revises his heralded and widely employed PHE typology.

Daniel Levy has written an impressive study of private higher education worldwide in recent decades. The work reports extensive data, sophisticated interpretations of regional and national patterns, and an analysis of the many types of private education that arise in varying contexts. The book is a real advance and will be of great interest. * John W. Meyer, Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, Stanford University *
This book is rich in evidence and analytical rigour from one of the most eminent scholars in the domain, making it a rare piece on what PHE is and what it does in practice. * N.V. Varghese, Distinguished Visiting Professor, Indian Institute of Technology (ITT), Bombay *
An excellent volume on a very important and neglected topic. A must read for higher education experts and policymakers. * Harry Anthony Patrinos, Senior Advisor, Education, The World Bank *
A perfect introduction to a globally underexamined field. Written by perhaps the world's most respected scholar in private higher education, this book shows the power of a theoretically sophisticated approach to the changing dynamics of privateness and publicness in higher education. A must read. * Marek Kwiek, University of Poznan, Poland and UNESCO Chair in Institutional Research and Higher Education Policy *
After a lifetime of scholarship on private higher education worldwide, Daniel C. Levy has bequeathed the definitive treatise on the subject. In the best social science tradition, an impressive body of data delineates observable patterns, insightful comparisons, and consequential ideal types. A World of Private Higher Education reaches beyond its professed subject matter to reveal much of the evolution of all higher education over the last three [recent] decades. * Andrés Bernasconi, Professor of Education, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and President, National Accreditation Commission, Chile *
The breadth and depth of Professor Levy's scholarly work is impressive. It conveys a sense of the global scope, diversity, and importance of the private higher education (PHE) sector. It introduces concepts that facilitate a better understanding of PHE and its contribution to contemporary society. * Richard J. Joseph, Former President and Chief Executive Officer, Babson Global, Inc. *
Daniel Levy's A World of Private Higher Education is an outstanding contribution to the field of comparative higher education. Professor Levy's latest book provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of private higher education over the past decades in a global perspective. One of the great merits of the book is to bring out the distinctiveness and nuances that characterize the variety of private providers operating across the world through a skilled combination of thematic, historical, and geographical exploration. [This] work will undoubtedly be the most important reference for scholars and policy analysts interested in the world of private higher education. * Jamil Salmi, Global Tertiary Education Expert, Emeritus Professor of Higher Education Policy, Diego Portales University (Chile) *
