The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II cover

The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II is a rich source of information and reflections on many aspects of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), one of the most significant religious events of the twentieth century. The chapters introduce readers to the historical context and outstanding features of the conciliar event, and its principal teachings on Scripture and Tradition, the church, liturgy, religious liberty, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, church-world relations, and mission. Consideration is given to some neglected aspects of the council, including: the forgotten papal speeches that lay out its fundamental orientation and ought to guide its interpretation; the presence and contributions of women; and the non-reception of the council among Catholic traditionalists. Ecumenical scholars reflect on the significance of Vatican II for the life of other Christian churches and the search for Christian unity; others examine Catholic dialogue with other religious traditions. Surveying the diverse receptions of the council in the perspective of a world church, chapters focusing on Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Oceania, and Europe reflect on the interpretation and influence of the council and its teaching on the life of the church in diverse cultural contexts. This Handbook will serve as a valuable guide to one of the most important events and bodies of Catholic teaching since the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century, to the interpretation of the council's teaching, and to its continuing role in guiding the life of the church in the twenty-first century. .

The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II he Oxford Handbook of Vatican II attempts a Herculean task...Those in the English speaking world who teach Catholic theology now have a book at hand that comprehensively considers virtually every important post-conciliar subject, filled with references and additional resources, against which scholars and average Catholics can crosscheck their arguments and intuitions. * Michael Sean Winters, National Catholic Reporter *
For those who know little of the council, the book is the perfect primer. For those called to preach or teach in the name of the church, it becomes an invaluable guide, from university professors to parish priests to catechists. * Michael Sean Winters, National Catholic Reporter *
The Oxford Handbook to Vatican II is a substantial achievement, a key resource for understanding the Council. It will, no doubt, generate its own richly diverse reception history. * Alexander Faludy, Ordained presbyter in the Church of England and a freelance journalist, lives in Cambridge (England) and Budapest (Hungary). *
The publication of a new volume in the important and prestigious series of Oxford University Handbooks, wholly devoted to Vatican II, has a symbolic significance, even more than a historical or theological one. * Antonio Ballarò, Il Regno - attualita *
This notable addition to the Oxford Handbook in Religion and Theology series lays out in copious but necessarily selective detail the gestation, event, and aftermath of one of the most significant ecclesial happenings of the twentieth century...Libraries will want to stock this volume in reference collections alongside the Cambridge Companion to Vatican II (2020), which shares many of the same authors. * Patrick J. Hayes, Catholic Books Review *
Offering a rich bibliographic synthesis and presenting a topic that is relevant not only for the Catholic space, but also for the global theological one, The Oxford Handbook on Vatican II, published by Oxford University Press in 2023 is an useful tool both for theologians, historians, sociologists or philosophers and should not be neglected by a researcher who wants to have a word to say in the contemporary research. * Iuliu-Marius Morariu, PhD, Theological Review *
In 44 chapters this handbook gives an impressive representation of the impact of Vaticanum II in the past, and of the potential the council still has to inspire for theology and practice. * Theologia Reformata *
This remarkable new Handbook takes the reader on an action-packed journey, beginning with the extraordinary atmosphere of the 1960s, elements of which reappear at different points throughout. * Rt Revd Stephen Platten, Church Times *
The volume is a hugely impressive achievement, demonstrating that the Second Vatican Council continues to be a site of mature - if still incomplete - reception beyond well-worn controversies, and a source of important and stimulating scholarship. I can see it being a standard reference point for teachers and students, as well as a rich but accessible book for the interested non-specialist....this is superb volume which justifies its place, even on already-crowded Vatican II bookshelves, for a wide range of readers. * Gregory A. Ryan, The Heythrop Journal *
The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II is an invaluable resource for graduate students, scholars, and teachers of the council who wish to encounter new, global, and growing edges of Vatican II scholarship. * Elyse J. Raby, Shorter Notices *
