A very accessible introduction to the art, and the cultural and political history, of the period. It is eminently readable; pitched to the undergraduate student (including an immensely useful updated bibliographical guide), it is approachable enough for the general reader, and would likely be the kind of book I would recommend to an enthusiastic sixth-former.
