This edited volume examines the connections between climate justice and non-ideal theory, offering insights for practical policy solutions in a challenging world.
This volume, Climate Justice in a Non-Ideal World, explores the intersection of normative theory and practical political realities concerning climate justice. As climate change emerges as a critical international issue, the need for solutions that are both principled and actionable has become increasingly urgent. This edited collection aims to bridge the gap between theoretical discussions and the realities faced by policymakers, emphasizing that even in a world marked by imperfection and partial compliance, normative theorizing can provide valuable insights.
The motivation behind Climate Justice in a Non-Ideal World stems from the lively debates surrounding non-ideal theory within political philosophy, particularly in relation to climate change. Key issues such as intergenerational justice, transnational harm, and collective action are examined through this lens. Despite the growing interest in these topics, there has been a lack of systematic exploration of how climate justice can inform and be informed by non-ideal theory. This volume seeks to fill that gap by presenting original contributions from leading experts in climate ethics, many of whom have direct experience in climate policy.
The book is structured in three parts: the first addresses the implications of current global action shortcomings on climate justice, the second offers practical adjustments to existing policies, and the final part reflects on how philosophical insights can enhance discussions in climate science and politics. Through this comprehensive approach, Climate Justice in a Non-Ideal World aims to provide a pathway toward more effective climate action that acknowledges the complexities of our current situation.
Collectively, the chapters provide an effective treatment of normative issues in climate politics and policy, with a uniformly strong set of contributions that are coherently organized and well informed by the realities of climate politics as well as the methods of and debates within political theory and applied ethics, and so the book should be of interest and use to scholars both of justice and of environmental politics and governance. While the separate chapters only occasionally address one another directly, they speak to common themes and could thus prove suitable for use in graduate-level teaching, as well as provide a primer on current questions in and approaches to the scholarly field of climate justice, with the variety of normative theories and methods that Climate Justice in a Non-Ideal World seeks to apply to this important contemporary environmental problem. * Perspectives on Politics *
