Sallust (86-35 BC) was a historian of major importance, writing at the time of the late Roman Republic. This is the first ever full-length commentary and English translation of one of his major works, the Histories, covering the years 78-67 BC, one of the least well-documented periods of the era. The translation is based on a text freshly examined for the first time since the original edition of 1891-3, and also includes newly discovered material.
'Patrick McGushin's edition, the first for nearly a hundred years, besides giving a clear translation of the surviving passages, provides a convincing account of what is likely to have been the overall structure of the work. McGushin is to be praised for making accessible a significant and problematic work.' Times Literary Supplement
'his book does give us the first complete translation of the fragments of Books 1-2 into any modern language, accompanied by a commentary on a quite ample scale ... M. has thus done a great service, both to advanced scholars, for whom the commentary contains much valuable information on the intricate problems of the fragments, and to students with little or no Latin, to whom M.'s work will make the complete fragments accessible for the first time.'
