Biomineralization cover

This book describes the principles and concepts of biomineralization and their application in the new field of biomimetic materials chemistry. The main focus is on the principles and concepts that arise from a chemical perspective of biomineralization. After surveying the major types of biominerals (chapter 2) the general principles of biomineralization are discussed (chapter 3), followed by a detailed description of the chemical aspects of biomineralization (chapter 4). The next four chapters are concerned with the process of biomineralization, including boundary-organized biomineralization (chapter 5), organic matrix-mediated biomineralization (chapter 6), morphogenesis (chapter 7) and biomineral tectonics (chapter 8). The final chapter describes how current knowledge of biomineralization is inspiring new biomimetic strategies in synthetic materials chemistry.

This is a good book which certainly fills a gap in the market. It can be recommended for all newcomers to the field and for everyone engaged in research in it. * Angewandte Chemie (International Edition) *
The book is well suited for browsing, as it is written in a relaxed and easily understandable style. Readers with limited time will be pleased by the fact that each section is followed by a brief résumeé of the main points in italic type, which allows one to get a quick overview without becoming lost in details ... The anecdotes and interesting additional comments that are scattered throughout the text make the book more relaxing and enjoyable to read. * Angewandte Chemie (International Edition) *
... this book is strongly recommended as essential reading for new researchers in the field, but also general reading for any chemist interested in gaining insight into some real wonders of nature. * Chemistry in Britain *
The book abounds with fascinating examples of real biominerals, illustrating the concepts involved. * Chemistry in Britain *
This inspriring book ... by one of the leading practictioners in the field, is the fifth in the series of Oxford Chemistry Masters and succeeds stunningly well in achieving the aims of the series in coaching chemists from advanced undergraduate to researcher level. * Chemistry in Britain *
