The Morphology of Dutch cover

This book provides the first fully-fledged description of the morphological system of Dutch written in English. Inflection, derivation, and compounding are each discussed in separate chapters, following a short exposition of the theoretical framework of the book. The interaction of morphology with phonology and with syntax is dealt with subsequently. The chapters also provide access to more detailed studies of Dutch that have appeared in the international literature. This book shows that the morphology of Dutch poses many interesting descriptive and theoretical challenges, and that its detailed analysis can contribute to ongoing theoretical discussions on the nature of word formation processes, the relation between syntagmatic and paradigmatic structure, rule-base versus constraint-based grammar, and the interface between morphology, phonology, syntax, and semantics. The book will be of relevance to students of Germanic languages, general linguists, typologists, computational linguists, and psycholinguists.

The merit of the book is that it not only introduces basic concepts, explains terminology and offers a detailed description of the morphology of Dutch, but also provides interesting analyses that contribute to the ongoing discussion on morphological issues. * Journal of Linguistics *
This book is the first general introduction to the morphology of Dutch to be published in English. It not only provides a thorough description of the morphology of Dutch, but also raises interesting theoretical issues such as the nature of word-formation processes and the interaction of morphology with syntax, phonology and semantics. * Journal of Linguistics *
This book supplies the need for an authoritative account of the morphology of Dutch in English and at the same time will make an important contribution to current theoretical discussions of word formation ... the author is the leading scholar in the field. * Folia Linguistica *
An excellent blend of descriptive detail and theoretical insight. Booij provides a clear and readable overview of the facts whilst at the same time succinctly pinpointing phenomena which are of particular theoretical importance ... of immense value to all those interested either in Dutch linguistics or in theoretical morphology. * Andrew Spencer, Professor of Linguistics, University of Essex *
Geert Booij here makes accessible to the general linguist the work that he and his colleagues have been doing on Dutch morphology for twenty-five years ... is a gold mine, both for those who know the subject and for those who are new to it. As an up-to-date overview of the morphology of a single major language, it is unsurpassed. * Mark Aronoff, Professor of Linguistics, Stony Brook *
