This volume presents the long-awaited edition of the Cave 4 manuscripts of Serekh Ha-Yahad or The Rule of the Community, in which the Essenes detailed the guidelines for membership in their community. Also known as the Manual of Discipline, a complete scroll was found in Cave 1 at Qumran and this edition illuminates the textual and redactional history of Dead Sea literature. The document is extremely important for understanding the nature, practice, and ideology of the Qumran covenanters.
The editors are to be congratulated on both their careful work and the speed with which they hve produced this fine volume. * International Review of Biblical Studies, Vol.45, 98/99. *
Alexander and Vermes vigorously defend their ambitious reconstructions of the Cave 4 manuscripts. While this approach will surely draw fire from some, it is to be preferred, inasmuch as the preserved texts have already been published in different venues and are well known. * Robert A. Kugler, The Catholic Bibal Quarterly, 62,2000. *
this volume is well worth the wait. A and V have done sterling work, and we are in their debt. * Robert A. Kugler, The Catholic Bibal Quarterly, 62,2000. *
a volume that reads like a seamless whole, rich with palaeographical, linguistic and historical information ... this official volume renders all others obsolete, stamped as it is by the sure hand and authoritative transcription, translation and commentary of the editors ... This volume provides many insights and corrections to previous scholarship ... exemplary in its presentation and discussion of one of the key texts of the Qumran community. Both Alexander, who prepared the plates himself, and Vermes deserve thanks for setting all future research on the Rule of the Community on such solid ground. * Timothy H Lim, Journal of Theological Studies 50:2 October 1999 *
