Sincerity and Truth cover

These essays reflect upon Pierre Bayle's Philosophical Commentary on the Words of the Gospel 'Compel them to come in' which appeared in parts in 1686-88, a classic statement of the case for toleration. The first two essays are concerned with controversies about religious toleration in the seventeenth century, and the rest discuss philosophical questions relating to toleration and to the broader liberal idea of an open society. Three of the pieces originally appeared in Philosophy Research Archives and are reproduced here with alterations.

`This tantalizingly brilliant book contains a sharply clear discussion of the nature of freedom, tolerance and moral obligation. The analyses of the problems are penetrating, the presentation is elegant.' The Heythrop Journal
'he is fastidious in his exegesis, and conscientious in establishing the moral and theological positions adopted by each writer in the context of his times' Judith Sproxton, University of Birmingham. THES
'a scholarly and interesting book' David Brown, Journal of Theological Studies
'an unusual and intriguing blend of philosophical analysis with the history of ideas' John Dunn, King's College, Cambridge, Historical Journal
