Language Contact and Change cover

Although the large Hispanic community of Los Angeles is basically a geographically stable urban community, bound by historical, social, linguistic, and cultural factors, both its boundaries and its internal structure are impermanent and undergoing constant change. In this original study of Spanish-English bilinguals in Los Angeles County, Carmen Silva-Corvalán explores in depth the linguistic, cognitive, and social processes underlying language maintenance, as well as changes characteristic of language shift and loss. She brings together analytical techniques employed in sociolinguistics, functional syntax, and discourse analysis.

This work is the first comprehensive sociolinguistic study of a Spanish variety within the United States that combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data...Silva-Corvalán's volume offers a complete view of a specific group of speakers representing the single most in-depth study of linguistics and social phenomena related to this community. * Anthropological Linguistics Vol 37 *
excellent theoretical (but data-rich) book ... thought-provoking study ... By combining painstaking field-work with well-informed and up-to-date analysis and theory, Silva succeeds in serving at least three groups of masters at once ... this book will make very worthwhile reading. * Armin Schwegler, University of California, Irvine, Language in Society 25:2 (1996) *
