The Receyt of the Ladie Kateryne L cover

In October and November of 1501, the Tudor court devised a festival to celebrate the marriage of Henry VII's eldest son, Prince Arthur, to Katharine of Aragon, daughter of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. The Receytof the Ladie Kateryneis a detailed account of the event, probably compiled as an offical memorial. It chronicles Katharine of Aragon's arrival in England, her triumphant entry into London, her marriage to Prince Arthur, the disguisings and tournament held in honour of that marriage, and Prince Arthur's funeral in Ludlow and Worcester a few months later. Introductions on the nature of the festivities and on the text are followed by the text with appendix, Commentary, Select glossary, Biographical index and Select Bibliography.

'Gordon Kipling's scrupulous and informative edition of the Receyt will be of great interest to historians of court pageantry, as well as to anyone curious to trace Catherine of Aragon's peregrinations up and down the snakes-and-ladders board of Tudor England ... a careful assemblage of materials related to entertainments in five early Tudor households' Times Literary Supplement
'In this careful and well-researched edition, the Receyt carries us along all the way through the extended celebrations.' S.S. Hussey, Lancaster University, Notes and Queries, June 1992
`Apart from its historical interest, the work is of importance to students of drama ... Kipling's edition comprises a general and textual introduction, a conservative critical text, commentary, and glossary. All are capably done.' A.S.G. Edwards, Speculum - A Journal of Medieval Studies
'a complete scholarly edition, collated with other cognate manuscripts ... Supported by full and informative notes and a brief index of the major historical personages, the text offers a splendid teaching resource for medieval and Renaissance drama-scholars. The Receyt is both a major document of theatrical history and a unique literary creation. This excellent scholarly edition should be an essential addition to our libraries.'
